In a bold move to enhance aviation safety, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered a comprehensive operation to establish “No-Bird Zones” around Lahore’s airports, targeting bird strike prevention during critical take-off and landing phases. Launched on July 13, 2025, this initiative aims to align Pakistan with international aviation safety standards, protecting passengers and aircraft.
Operation to Curb Bird Hazards
The Punjab government, in collaboration with the district administration, Punjab Wildlife Department, and Environment Protection Agency, has designated high-risk areas such as Lahore Eastern Bypass, Manawan, PKLI, Ichhra, and Chah Miran as “No-Bird Zones.” These zones will see strict enforcement to reduce bird activity, a major cause of aviation incidents globally, with bird strikes costing airlines millions annually, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has been tasked with leading Punjab’s first dedicated Wildlife Force, comprising field rangers who will enforce compliance under the Punjab Wildlife Act. Violators, including those feeding birds in public spaces or engaging in rooftop pigeon breeding, face fines, arrests, or other penalties.
Strict Regulations on Businesses
To curb bird attraction, the government has banned open garbage dumping and mandated covered waste bins for businesses, particularly slaughterhouses, poultry farms, and bakeries near airports. Illegal operations in these zones will be shut down, and strict waste disposal regulations enforced to prevent birds from gathering. CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that no business activity posing a risk to aviation safety will be tolerated.
Global Context and Local Impact
Bird strikes pose a significant threat worldwide, with incidents like the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson” highlighting their dangers. In Pakistan, where Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport is a key hub, this initiative underscores the government’s commitment to passenger safety. It also complements efforts to boost Pakistan’s global image, aligning with tech advancements like the $500M+ freelancing economy and AI training initiatives. Newsera: Pakistan’s Freelancing Economy
Why It Matters
The “No-Bird Zones” reflect Punjab’s proactive approach to meeting ICAO standards, ensuring safer skies for millions of passengers. By addressing environmental and business practices, the operation could set a model for other regions. As Pakistan grows as a digital and aviation hub, such measures enhance its global standing.
